Reading of the Day

Psalm 100:1-5

Psalm 100:1-5 · Gratitude

“Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his… Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”
— Psalm 100:1-5

Reflection

This psalm was sung by pilgrims walking through literal temple gates, and it names the password for entry: thanksgiving. Not perfection, not performance, not a mood you must first manufacture — gratitude. The reasoning given is simple and sturdy: the LORD is good, His love endures, His faithfulness outlasts generations. Gratitude is simply agreeing with those facts out loud.

"We are his" — the psalm's quiet center. We belong to the One who made us, which means we are never guests negotiating for audience; we are children coming home. If prayer has felt distant lately, do not begin with your request. Begin with thanks — even for breath, for morning light, for one person who loves you. Thanksgiving is the gate, and the gate is never locked.
